Here’s a fun and important topic I want to share with you. I’m always asked, “Where do you get your protein on a raw vegan diet?” 

Answer: The same place elephants, bulls, and buffalos get their protein — from eating plants. See, we have been misguided and programmed to believe that the only source of protein is from meat — aka, animal tissue. But in reality, plant-based foods contain plenty of extremely high-quality protein that is actually easier for your body to digest and assimilate. The reason they are higher quality is simple: Plant proteins are found inside plant cells, the walls of which are made of the rigid material we call fiber. Fiber passes through our system in a nice, orderly fashion, giving us healthy, regular bowel movements. In contrast, animal proteins are inside of animal cells, the walls of which are made of cholesterol, which our bodies aren’t well-equipped to break down. It coats our gut with grease, making absorption difficult. It constipates us. And when absorbed into our blood, cholesterol makes our blood thick, clogs our arteries, and kills more Americans than anything else. By eating a variety of plants in your diet, including plenty of greens, it is very easy to get 100% “complete” protein, meaning all 8 essential amino acids are present in abundance. Read More……

Know your reasons for going raw.

If you’re diving into the world of raw foods, you most likely have at least one reason for making the change. Is it for weight loss? Is it for longevity? Is it for energy? Maybe it’s for glowing skin? Whatever the reason is, be willing to learn as you go. You may find that the more dedicated you become and the better your begin to feel, your reasons may change. And that’s okay. Our understanding of the world evolves and changes as we grow and transform. You also might find that to feel your very best, you will need to be more diligent about getting enough calories per day, to avoid tanking your metabolism, or relying on roughage. Be willing to educate yourself around an entirely new way of seeing food and the world. If you’re doing this for one reason, be it skin, weight, etc. such one-minded thinking can not only be a discouraging distraction, it can also be stressful on the mind and body. Here at The Belly Fit Club we always want to encourage everyone to become intimately aware of their own body wisdom, and to listen closely to the messages that come up. For instance, eating raw might result in weight loss, but it is not a weight loss diet, this is not its ultimate goal. Vibrant health, and longevity are the selling points, which is a good place to start because a longer, healthier life means more time with family member and loved ones.

Kristie’s 11-Day BODY BOOST! {day nine}

Today is DAY 9 of #kristiesbodyboost and you know what that means…It’s time to celebrate!  Chocolate anyone? 

The beauty about this program is that you never feel deprived. Having the recipes to make a delicious raw dessert is a huge key to staying on track.  Today, let us have donuts!  Yes, thats right, DONUTS! 

Heres a fun video showing you how to make raw donut holes that are healthy and energizing! Note: this video was done for a school program that is helping kids get more active and eat better. 🙂 

CHOCOLATE DONUT HOLES:


 

Recipe:

1 1/2 cups raw walnuts

1 cup packed Medjool Dates

1/3 cup RAW Cocoa Powder

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

1/8 tsp sea salt

1 TBS water, if needed

In a food processor, combine the walnuts, dates, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt and process until the mixture sticks to together. It should look like a big ball of cookie dough. Roll into little balls and chill.  You can decorate the balls by rolling them into chopped walnuts, raw cocoa, or shredded coconut.

RAW TIP! 

Be balanced.

This goes for both the mind and body. In regards to a balanced mind, do not attempt a raw diet if it makes you unhappy, stressed, or tired. Feed your mind, soul and heart with your plant-based foods so that you may become more satisfied and whole. If the case is that it in fact does the opposite, don’t worry. It doesn’t mean raw is too hard for you, it simply means it’s not for you. Do not neglect your mental well being and peace of mind, for it’s just as hungry for nourishment as the belly. In order to have a balanced body, make sure you are consuming enough protein, carbohydrates and fats. Fruits and vegetables will provide most of your carbohydrates, while nuts, seeds, coconut and avocados can give you efficient fat fuel. Lastly, while protein exists in many raw plants, as well as nuts and seeds, be aware of deriving enough. Trying to eat low-cal on a raw food diet is often a recipe for disaster when it comes to your metabolism. As an added bonus, however, the enzymes in raw foods will enable your body to process and use protein even more effectively.

Welcome to DAY 7! We are ONE WEEK into this program and everyone is doing fantastic!

Are you having a hard time getting your greens in? Then please read on……

When I first began this way of living over 15 years ago, I discovered that all these “RAW FOODIES” were drinking something called “Green Smoothies”. Because I was new to this way of living I decided to give it a whirl and though my smoothie was definitely green…it tasted like grass clippings to me.  I’ve come along way since then and today enjoy making Green Smoothies daily.  The difference today is knowing how to combine the right foods to create something delicious and nutritious. 

Why a green smoothie? Greens are rich in nutrients, minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes, and when blended into a green smoothie, these greens are easily digested.  Greens aid in cleansing and healing  the body, they boost your immune system, and because they are rich in nutrients, you will feel less hungry and more satisfied helping you to lose weight, have fewer cravings, and feel healthier and happier. 

Check out this Happy Shake that is sure to please everyone!

In your Vitamix:

1/2 cup water

4 cups spinach

1 TBS coconut oil

1 TBS Maca Power

2 TBS RAW Cocoa Power

1 cup frozen blueberries

1/4 cup frozen cherries

1/2 cup frozen banana, slice before freezing

Blend the first 5 ingredients until smooth

add the fruit and blend again. 🙂 

Be prepared to have feelings of pure joy and happiness!

Focus on what you can have, not what you can’t.

One of the most challenging hurdles most new raw foodies must overcome is the glaring and intimidating list of “no-no” foods. Most restaurant meals are cooked, unless you ask otherwise, and they generally come smothered in processed oils or sauces certain to not be raw-approved, and therefore might come as an obstacle for dinner outings with friends. There’s no rules about how raw one has to be to derive benefits. If you want to stick with the raw diet 100% ask the waiter if he can provide you with a large raw salad with oil and lemon, or another modification of something on the menu. Better yet, call ahead to the restaurant to see how they can accommodate you in a tastier way. Ultimately – embrace your choices and your options. Be willing to make it work in your favor and don’t get caught off-guard.
